Why this works

A simple, moderate-calorie toast bake with decent protein, but relatively high sodium from the deli meat and sauce.

Protein from deli meat. Provides a useful protein boost, which can help with satiety and muscle repair.

Sodium is quite high. Deli meat and tomato sauce can contribute a significant amount of salt, which is worth noting for blood pressure health.

Wholegrain potential. If made with wholemeal bread, the dish would provide more fibre, B vitamins and slower-release carbohydrate.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C, 392°F, Gas Mark 6) and line a baking tray.
  2. Place the bread on the tray and spread each slice with tomato sauce.
  3. Top with the deli meat, folding it slightly for even coverage.
  4. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the bread is crisp and the topping is hot through.
  5. Serve immediately while warm and toasty.
