Why this works

A rich, protein-heavy bake that is relatively low in carbohydrates but high in saturated fat and salt, so best enjoyed in moderation.

High-quality protein. Minced beef and cheese provide substantial protein, supporting satiety and muscle maintenance.

Vitamin C and antioxidants. Red cabbage and mixed peppers contribute vitamin C and protective plant compounds, which can support immune health.

Salt and saturated fat concern. Cheddar, soft cheese, butter and added salt push saturated fat and sodium quite high for a single serving.

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 190°C (Fan 170°C, 374°F, Gas Mark 5).
  2. In a large frying pan, melt the butter and brown the minced beef for 6–8 minutes, seasoning with salt and black pepper.
  3. Add the red cabbage and mixed peppers, then cook for 8 minutes until starting to soften.
  4. Stir in the soft cheese and herbs, then spoon the mixture into an ovenproof dish.
  5. Top with the cheddar cheese and bake for 20–25 minutes until bubbling and golden.
