Why this works
A hearty, energy-dense pasta bake with substantial protein, but also relatively high in saturated fat and sodium.
High-quality protein. The meat and cheese provide a large protein contribution, supporting satiety and muscle maintenance.
Calcium source. Cheese adds calcium, which is important for bone health, though it also increases saturated fat.
Tomato and onion base. The sauce, garlic and onion contribute some vitamin C, potassium and plant compounds, but the dish is not especially high in fibre.
Method
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C, 392°F, Gas Mark 6).
- Cook the pasta in a large pan of salted water until just underdone, then drain.
- In a pan, soften the onion in a little oil for 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
- Add the meat and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
- Pour in the pasta sauce and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Stir through the pasta, transfer to a baking dish and top with cheese.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes until bubbling and golden on top.
