Why this works
A savoury, energy-dense rice dish with moderate protein, low fibre, and relatively high sodium and saturated fat from the bacon.
Protein from bacon. Bacon contributes a useful amount of protein, but it also raises the dish’s saturated fat and sodium content.
Low fibre carbohydrate base. Basmati rice provides energy but very little fibre, so this dish may be less filling than higher-fibre meals.
Sodium concern. Bacon and added salt can make this meal quite high in sodium, which is worth noting for blood pressure health.
Method
- Rinse the basmati rice, then cook it in water until tender and the grains are separate.
- While the rice cooks, fry the bacon in a pan until the fat has rendered and the pieces are golden.
- Drain the rice and add it to the pan with the bacon.
- Stir well so the rice picks up the savoury bacon flavour and cook for 2 minutes more.
- Season with salt and black pepper if using, then serve hot.
