Why this works
A very energy-dense, high-protein bake that is rich in saturated fat and salt, so it suits occasional indulgence rather than everyday eating.
High-quality protein. Beef, eggs and cheddar provide a substantial protein hit per serving, supporting satiety and muscle maintenance.
Calcium source. Cheddar and sour cream contribute calcium, which is important for bones and teeth.
High saturated fat and salt. Cheddar, butter, beef mince and added salt push saturated fat and sodium quite high, which may be less suitable for heart health.
Method
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C, 392°F, Gas Mark 6). Lightly grease a baking dish with a little of the butter.
- Heat the butter in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the mince and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned all over.
- Transfer the cooked mince to the baking dish and spread it out evenly.
- In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and sour cream until smooth, then stir through most of the grated cheese.
- Season generously with salt and black pepper if using, then pour the mixture over the mince.
- Scatter the remaining cheese over the top and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until set in the middle and golden on top.
- Rest for 5 minutes before serving so the bake slices neatly.
