Why this works

Rich, savoury dip that is high in protein but also high in saturated fat and salt, so best enjoyed in small portions.

Protein from cheddar and ham. Provides a useful amount of protein per serving, which supports satiety and muscle maintenance.

Calcium-rich dairy. Cheddar and milk contribute calcium for bone health, though the cheese also raises saturated fat.

Salt and processed meat content. Ham and the added pinch of salt increase sodium, making this less suitable for a low-salt diet.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C, 392°F, Gas Mark 6).
  2. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over a low heat, then stir in the plain flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth and simmer gently until thickened.
  4. Stir in the chopped ham, cheese and condiment, then season if needed with salt and black pepper.
  5. Spoon into a small ovenproof dish and bake for 10–12 minutes until hot and bubbling.
  6. Serve immediately while warm.
