Why this works

A hearty, high-protein baked strata that is filling but also high in saturated fat and sodium, so best enjoyed in moderation.

Protein-rich. Ham, eggs, cheddar and milk provide a substantial amount of protein, supporting satiety and muscle repair.

Calcium source. Cheddar and milk contribute useful calcium for bone health, though the dish is also high in saturated fat.

Sodium concern. Ham and cheese make this dish relatively high in sodium, which may be less suitable for those limiting salt.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (Fan 160°C, 356°F, Gas Mark 4) and butter a medium baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into bite-sized pieces and arrange half in the dish with half the ham, onion and cheddar.
  3. Add the remaining bread, ham, onion and cheddar, then scatter over the grated cheese.
  4. Whisk the eggs and milk together with a little salt and black pepper, then pour evenly over the bread mixture. Press down gently so the bread soaks up the custard.
  5. Leave to stand for 10 minutes, then sprinkle with parsley and dot the top with a little butter.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes until puffed, golden and just set in the middle. Rest for 5 minutes before serving.
