Why this works

Rich, energy-dense dip with high saturated fat and sodium, best enjoyed in small portions.

Calcium and protein. Cheddar and cream cheese provide calcium and a moderate amount of protein for bone and muscle support.

Sodium content. Hot sauce, mayonnaise and cheese make this a relatively salty dip, which may be a consideration for blood pressure management.

Low fibre. Tomatoes contribute some vitamin C and lycopene, but the overall fibre is low because the recipe is mostly dairy-based.

Method

  1. Finely chop the tomatoes and place them in a bowl with the hot sauce.
  2. Add the cream cheese and mayonnaise, then stir until smooth and well combined.
  3. Fold through most of the grated cheese, reserving a little for the top.
  4. Spoon the mixture into a small ovenproof dish and scatter over the remaining cheese.
  5. Bake at 200°C (Fan 180°C, 392°F, Gas Mark 6) for 10–12 minutes until bubbling and golden. Serve hot.
