Why this works

A rich, savoury dish that is high in protein and energy, but also high in saturated fat and sodium, so best enjoyed as an occasional meal rather than an everyday choice.

Good protein content. Eggs, bacon and cheese provide a substantial amount of protein, supporting satiety and muscle maintenance.

Calcium and B vitamins. Cheese and eggs contribute calcium, vitamin B12 and riboflavin, which support bone health and energy metabolism.

High in salt and saturated fat. Bacon, cheese and added salt make this dish relatively high in sodium and saturated fat, which may be a concern for heart health.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (Fan 160°C, 356°F, Gas Mark 4) and lightly butter a baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into rough cubes and place in the dish.
  3. Cook the bacon in a pan until just crisp, then roughly chop it and scatter over the bread.
  4. Beat the eggs with a little seasoning, then stir in the grated cheese and chopped parsley.
  5. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and bacon, pressing down gently so the bread begins to absorb the custard.
  6. Dot the top with the butter and bake for 25-30 minutes until puffed, golden and just set in the centre.
  7. Rest for 5 minutes before serving hot.
