Why this works

A calorie-dense, savoury side with moderate protein but high saturated fat and salt, so best kept as an occasional treat rather than an everyday staple.

Calcium from cheese. The grated cheese provides a useful amount of calcium, which supports bone health.

Saturated fat content. Butter and cheese contribute a relatively high level of saturated fat, which is worth limiting if you are watching heart health.

Salt contribution. Even a pinch of added salt, plus the cheese, adds to sodium intake, so portions matter.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C, 392°F, Gas Mark 6).
  2. Mix the softened butter with half the parsley and a pinch of salt if using.
  3. Spread the butter evenly over the bread slices.
  4. Scatter the grated cheese over the top.
  5. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling and the bread is crisp at the edges.
  6. Finish with the remaining parsley and serve immediately.
