Why this works

A filling, moderate-calorie breakfast with good fibre from oats and banana, but it contains some added fat and sugar depending on the creamer used.

Beta-glucan fibre. Porridge oats provide soluble fibre, which can support healthy cholesterol levels and help with fullness.

Potassium and vitamin B6. Banana contributes potassium for normal muscle and nerve function, plus some vitamin B6.

Added sodium and processed creamer. A pinch of salt and non-dairy creamer can increase sodium and saturated fat, depending on the brand.

Method

  1. Bring the water to a simmer in a small saucepan, then stir in the porridge oats and a pinch of salt.
  2. Cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring often, until thick and creamy.
  3. Stir in the non-dairy creamer and cinnamon, then cook for 1 minute more.
  4. Spoon into a bowl and top with sliced banana if using.
