Why this works

Sweet treat that is low in fat and sodium but very high in sugar, so best enjoyed occasionally rather than as an everyday snack.

Apples provide fibre. Each serving contains some soluble fibre from the apple, which supports digestive health and helps slow sugar absorption a little.

Very high in sugar. Most of the energy comes from caster sugar and golden syrup, making this a concentrated source of free sugars.

Naturally low in sodium and fat. The recipe is almost fat-free and extremely low in sodium, which is favourable from a heart health perspective, though the sugar content remains high.

Method

  1. Wash and dry the apples thoroughly, then push a wooden skewer into the stalk end of each apple.
  2. Line a tray with baking paper and lightly oil it.
  3. Put the caster sugar, golden syrup and water into a saucepan over a medium heat.
  4. Stir gently for 2 minutes until the sugar dissolves, then stop stirring and let it boil to a deep amber toffee.
  5. Carefully add the white vinegar and swirl the pan.
  6. Working quickly, tilt the pan and coat each apple in the toffee, turning each apple to cover it evenly.
  7. Place the apples on the prepared tray and leave them for 20 minutes until completely set before eating.
