Why this works

A protein-rich, very low-carbohydrate dish that is relatively high in saturated fat and sodium due to the mince, butter, hot sauce and pickles.

High-quality protein. Beef mince provides a substantial amount of protein, which supports muscle repair and helps with satiety.

Iron and B12. Beef is a useful source of haem iron and vitamin B12, both important for red blood cell formation and energy metabolism.

Sodium caution. Hot sauce and pickles can push sodium up, which may be a concern for anyone watching blood pressure or salt intake.

Method

  1. Melt the butter in a frying pan over a medium-high heat.
  2. Add the mince and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until well browned and cooked through.
  3. Stir in the hot sauce and a spoonful of chopped pickles, then cook for 1 minute so the flavours combine.
  4. Taste and add a little more hot sauce if you like it hotter.
  5. Serve straight away as a warm bowl or spooned into crisp lettuce leaves, with extra chopped pickles on top.
