Why this works

A very energy-dense toastie with high saturated fat and sodium, best enjoyed as an occasional treat rather than an everyday meal.

High sodium. Salami, cheese, mayonnaise and added salt make this dish particularly salty, which may be a concern for blood pressure if eaten often.

High saturated fat. Butter, cheese, mayonnaise and salami contribute a large amount of saturated fat, so this toastie is heavy rather than heart-friendly.

Protein and calcium. The salami and cheese provide a decent protein hit, and the cheese also contributes calcium.

Method

  1. Mix the garlic mayo and mayonnaise together if you want a milder filling.
  2. Spread the mixture over two slices of bread, then layer on the salami and grated cheese.
  3. Close the sandwich and butter the outside lightly.
  4. Cook in a frying pan over medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until golden and melted.
  5. Slice and serve immediately.
