Why this works

A sugary, low-fibre snack with moderate energy from bread and icing; best enjoyed occasionally rather than as an everyday choice.

Added sugar. The coloured icings contribute most of the sugar, making this a treat with limited nutritional value.

Low fibre. Using only 4 slices of bread across 4 servings means each portion provides little fibre, so it is unlikely to be very filling.

Some B vitamins from bread. Bread can provide small amounts of B vitamins and energy, though these are outweighed by the added icing in this recipe.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C, 392°F, Gas Mark 6) and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Cut the bread into bite-sized squares or fingers and arrange them on the tray.
  3. Toast the bread in the oven for 5 to 7 minutes, turning once, until crisp and lightly golden.
  4. Warm each icing colour very slightly if needed so it is easier to drizzle, keeping the green icing, brown icing, yellow icing, purple icing, black icing, and grey icing in separate little spoons or piping bags.
  5. Drizzle the coloured icings over the toasted bread bites in stripes or zigzags, mixing the colours for a rainbow effect.
  6. Leave for a few minutes so the icing sets before serving.
