Why this works

An indulgent, energy-dense dessert with moderate protein, but high in saturated fat and sugar.

Calcium from cheese. The cheese adds calcium for bone health, though it also increases saturated fat and sodium.

Energy from bread and chocolate. The bread and chocolate provide quick-release carbohydrate and fat, making this a high-energy dish.

Low fibre. Using refined bread and chocolate gives relatively little fibre, so this is less filling than a wholegrain version.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (Fan 160°C, 356°F, Gas Mark 4) and lightly grease a small baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into bite-sized pieces and arrange them in the dish.
  3. Roughly chop the chocolate bar and scatter it through the bread.
  4. Grate the cheese finely and sprinkle it over the top, keeping a little aside for a swirl if desired.
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the chocolate has melted, the cheese is bubbling, and the top is golden.
  6. Rest for 5 minutes before serving warm.
