Why this works

A very energy-dense, high-salt toasted sandwich with good protein but high saturated fat and sodium.

High sodium content. Spam, cheddar, pickles and barbecue sauce all contribute, so this dish is likely very high in salt and may be unsuitable for people monitoring blood pressure.

Substantial protein. Spam and cheddar provide a useful protein hit per serving, which can support satiety and muscle maintenance.

Low fibre. White bread and the processed meat/cheese filling offer little fibre, so this meal is not especially gut-friendly or blood-sugar supportive.

Method

  1. Slice the Spam and fry it in a dry pan until lightly browned.
  2. Stir the barbecue sauce and mustard together, then coat the Spam in the mixture and cook for 1 minute until glossy.
  3. Butter the outside of the bread and fill with the glazed Spam and chopped pickles.
  4. Toast in a pan or sandwich press until golden and hot through, then cut and serve.
