Why this works

A filling, protein-rich toastie with relatively high saturated fat and sodium, best enjoyed occasionally as a more indulgent meal.

Protein from ham and cheddar. Provides a substantial protein hit per serving, which may support satiety and muscle maintenance.

Calcium from cheese. Cheddar contributes useful calcium for bone health, though it also adds saturated fat and salt.

Sodium is relatively high. Cooked ham and cheddar make this dish quite salty, so it may not suit those needing to watch blood pressure or overall salt intake.

Method

  1. Lay out the bread slices and spread margarine on one side of each slice.
  2. On the unspread side of two slices, layer the cooked ham, pineapple and cheese evenly.
  3. Top with the remaining bread slices, margarine-side facing out, and press gently together.
  4. Heat a frying pan over medium heat and cook the toasties for 2–3 minutes on each side until golden and the cheese has melted.
  5. Slice in half and serve hot.
