Why this works

A mostly carbohydrate-based snack with modest fibre and vitamin C, but relatively high in sugar from the jam and fruit.

Vitamin C. The orange provides a meaningful amount of vitamin C, supporting immune function and aiding iron absorption.

Fibre. Banana, orange and bread contribute some fibre, which helps with digestive health and satiety.

Added sugar. Jam is the main source of added sugar, so this dish can be quite sweet for the portion size.

Method

  1. Toast the bread slices until lightly golden, if you like a little crunch, then leave them to cool for 1 minute.
  2. Peel the banana and slice it thinly. Peel the orange and separate it into small segments, removing any pips.
  3. Spread jam over 2 slices of bread.
  4. Top the jam with banana slices and orange segments, then sandwich with the remaining bread slices.
  5. Cut each sandwich into neat triangles or fingers and serve immediately.
