Why this works

A filling, energy-dense sandwich with a good protein hit, but it is high in saturated fat and sodium from the sausages, cheese, butter and added salt.

Protein from sausages and cheese. Provides a substantial amount of protein per serving, which supports satiety and muscle maintenance.

High saturated fat. Cheddar, butter and processed sausage make this dish particularly high in saturated fat, so it is best enjoyed occasionally.

Sodium concern. The sausages plus added salt make the sodium level relatively high, which may be a consideration for blood pressure.

Method

  1. Slice the cooked sausages into thin rounds.
  2. Butter one side of each bread slice lightly.
  3. Place two slices of bread, butter-side out, on a board. Divide the sausage slices and cheddar cheese between them, then season with a little salt and black pepper.
  4. Top with the remaining bread slices, butter-side out.
  5. Heat a frying pan over medium heat and toast the sandwiches for 2–3 minutes per side, pressing gently, until golden and the cheese has melted. Serve hot.
