Why this works

A rich, energy-dense toastie that is high in saturated fat and sodium, with a moderate protein contribution from the cheese.

Calcium-rich cheese. The cheese provides a meaningful amount of calcium, supporting bone health, along with some phosphorus and vitamin B12.

High saturated fat. Butter and cheese contribute a high saturated fat content, which is best kept occasional under UK healthy eating guidance.

Moderate sodium. Cheese and bread together can contribute a notable amount of salt, making this less suitable for a low-sodium diet.

Method

  1. Lay out the bread slices and butter the outsides lightly if butter is available; if not, use a dry non-stick pan.
  2. Place the cheese between the bread slices, keeping the filling centred to help it melt evenly.
  3. Heat a frying pan over a medium-low heat and cook the sandwich for 2–4 minutes per side until the bread is golden and the cheese has fully melted.
  4. Press gently with a spatula as it cooks for an even, crisp toastie.
  5. Slice in half and serve immediately while hot.
