Why this works

A filling, high-protein toastie with plenty of calcium, but also quite high in saturated fat and sodium because of the ham, cheddar and butter.

Protein-rich. Ham and cheddar provide a substantial amount of protein, which helps with satiety and muscle repair.

Calcium source. Cheddar contributes useful calcium for bone health, though it also raises saturated fat.

Sodium concern. Processed ham can make this dish relatively high in salt, so it may not suit a low-sodium diet.

Method

  1. Finely slice the onions and mushrooms.
  2. Melt half the butter in a frying pan over a medium heat and cook the onions for 4-5 minutes until softened.
  3. Add the mushrooms and cook for another 5-6 minutes until the moisture has cooked off and they are lightly browned. Season if desired.
  4. Lightly butter one side of each slice of bread.
  5. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer the ham, mushroom and onion mixture, and cheese, then top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing out.
  6. Heat a clean frying pan or toastie maker over a medium heat and cook the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until golden brown and the cheese has melted.
  7. Serve immediately while hot and crisp.
