Why this works

A hearty, energy-dense toastie with a good protein hit, but also high in saturated fat, salt and calories.

Protein from sausage and cheese. Provides a substantial amount of protein per serving, supporting satiety and muscle maintenance.

Calcium from cheddar. Cheddar contributes calcium for bone health, though it also adds considerable saturated fat and salt.

Vegetable contribution from mushrooms. Mushrooms add a small amount of fibre and provide B vitamins and selenium, but the overall dish remains relatively low in fibre.

Method

  1. Finely slice the cooked sausages and mushrooms.
  2. Heat a frying pan over a medium heat and cook the mushrooms in a little margarine until softened and any liquid has evaporated. Season with salt and black pepper.
  3. Add the sliced sausages to the pan and warm through for 1-2 minutes, then remove from the heat.
  4. Butter or margarine the outside of the bread slices, then place cheese on the inside of one slice. Top with the sausage and mushroom mixture, then add a little more cheese and sandwich with the second slice.
  5. Toast in a sandwich press or a clean frying pan over a low-medium heat until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted, turning once if needed.
  6. Rest for 1 minute, then slice and serve hot.
