Why this works

A rich, energy-dense bake with a good protein content, but it is high in saturated fat and relatively low in fibre.

Protein from eggs, cheese and milk. Provides a solid amount of protein per serving, supporting muscle maintenance and satiety.

Calcium-rich dairy ingredients. Milk and cheese contribute calcium for bone health, though this comes alongside a higher saturated fat load.

Low fibre, refined carbohydrate base. Standard bread adds carbohydrate but little fibre unless a higher-fibre loaf is used.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (Fan 160°C, 356°F, Gas Mark 4).
  2. Grease a small baking dish with margarine and layer in the bread.
  3. Whisk the eggs, milk and cream together, then pour over the bread so it soaks in.
  4. Scatter the cheese over the top and bake for 20–25 minutes until set and golden.
  5. Leave to stand for a few minutes before serving.
