Why this works

Rich and filling, this quiche is high in energy, saturated fat and sodium, with moderate protein and relatively low fibre.

Protein from eggs, ham and cheese. Provides a moderate amount of protein to support satiety and muscle maintenance.

High saturated fat. Single cream, butter and cheddar contribute a substantial saturated fat load, which may not suit heart-health-focused diets.

Sodium from ham and added salt. The ham and seasoning increase sodium, and the coleslaw may add more depending on the brand or dressing.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (Fan 170°C, 374°F, Gas Mark 5). Place the pastry case on a baking tray.
  2. Melt the butter in a small pan and gently soften the garlic for 1 minute, then leave to cool slightly.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and single cream until smooth. Stir in the ham and the softened garlic, then season with salt and black pepper if using.
  4. Pour the filling into the pastry case and bake for 30–35 minutes, until the centre is just set and the top is lightly golden.
  5. Leave the quiche to rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
  6. Serve warm with the coleslaw on the side.
