Why this works

Very energy-dense and high in saturated fat and salt, with a modest protein content and very little fibre.

Calcium-rich. Cheddar and cream contribute a useful amount of calcium for bone health, though the dish is also high in saturated fat.

Protein from bacon and cheese. Provides a decent protein hit per serving, which may support satiety and muscle maintenance.

High in salt and saturated fat. Bacon, cheddar and butter make this dish likely to be high in sodium and saturated fat, so it is best eaten occasionally.

Method

  1. Melt the butter in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
  2. Add the onion and cook for 5-6 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in the bacon and cook until it starts to crisp.
  4. Pour in the cream and simmer for 2-3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  5. Stir through the cheddar cheese until melted and glossy.
  6. Serve hot with lettuce on the side.
