Why this works
A savoury, protein-rich crostini with a high salt and saturated fat load, best enjoyed as an occasional meal or shared starter.
High protein. Ham, cheddar and cream cheese provide a substantial amount of protein, supporting satiety and muscle maintenance.
Calcium source. Cheddar and cream cheese contribute calcium for bone health, though this comes alongside a high saturated fat content.
High sodium. Cooked ham and added salt make this dish relatively salty, which may be a concern for blood pressure management.
Method
- Mix the cream cheese with the grated mature cheddar cheese and a little black pepper.
- Stir in most of the sliced spring onions, keeping a few aside for garnish.
- Warm the cooked ham trimmings in a pan for 1-2 minutes if you like them hot.
- Toast slices of bread until crisp, then spread generously with the cheese mixture.
- Top with the warm ham trimmings and the remaining spring onions, and finish with a tiny pinch of salt if needed.
