Why this works

A fairly energy-dense flapjack with moderate fibre from oats and banana, but also notable added sugar and fat from butter and margarine.

Beta-glucan from oats. Oats provide soluble fibre, including beta-glucan, which can support healthy cholesterol levels and steady digestion.

Potassium from bananas. Bananas contribute potassium, a mineral that helps maintain normal blood pressure and muscle function.

Added sugar and saturated fat. This recipe is relatively high in added sugar and contains butter, which increases saturated fat, so it is best enjoyed as an occasional treat.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (Fan 160°C, 356°F, Gas Mark 4) and line a baking tin with baking paper.
  2. Melt the butter or margarine with the sugar in a saucepan over a low heat.
  3. Mash the bananas in a bowl, then stir in the oats and Quaker.
  4. Pour in the melted butter mixture and mix until well combined.
  5. Press the mixture firmly into the prepared tin.
  6. Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden at the edges, then cool completely before slicing into bars.
