Why this works

A sweet, energy-dense dessert with moderate protein from milk but relatively low fibre and fairly high sugar per portion.

Calcium. Milk contributes calcium for bone health, though the amount per serving is modest.

Protein. Milk provides a small protein boost, but this dessert is not especially high in protein overall.

Sugar and refined carbohydrate. Cake contributes most of the sugar and starch, so this dish is best treated as an occasional sweet rather than an everyday snack.

Method

  1. Crumble the cake into small pieces, keeping a few larger chunks for texture.
  2. Warm the milk gently in a small pan until just steaming, then leave it to cool slightly.
  3. Pour a little of the milk over the cake crumbs and chunks so they soften without turning soggy.
  4. Spoon a layer of the soaked cake into serving glasses, then add more crumbs around the edges.
  5. Finish with the remaining milk-soaked cake mixture, chill for 10 minutes, and serve cold.
