Why this works

A sweet, energy-dense pudding with moderate protein from milk but low fibre and a relatively high sugar and saturated fat content.

Calcium from milk. Milk provides calcium for bone health, along with some iodine and vitamin B12.

High sugar load. Most of the carbohydrate comes from cake, so this dish is likely to raise blood glucose quickly and is best treated as an occasional dessert.

Low fibre. With refined cake as the main ingredient, this recipe is unlikely to support fullness or gut health well.

Method

  1. Crumble the cake into a small saucepan.
  2. Pour in the milk and stir gently over a low heat until the cake softens and the mixture becomes thick and creamy.
  3. Continue to warm for 2–3 minutes, stirring often so it does not catch on the bottom.
  4. Spoon into bowls and serve immediately while hot.
