Why this works

A filling, high-protein baked pasta dish that is energy-dense and relatively high in saturated fat and sodium.

High-quality protein. Beef mince and the two cheeses provide a substantial amount of protein, supporting muscle maintenance and satiety.

Source of vitamin C and lycopene. Tomatoes and tomato purée contribute vitamin C and lycopene, both useful antioxidant nutrients.

Higher sodium and saturated fat. Added salt, cheddar and soft cheese push sodium and saturated fat up, so this is best enjoyed in moderation.

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 190°C (Fan 170°C, 374°F, Gas Mark 5). Lightly grease a baking dish with the plain cooking oil.
  2. Cook the onion in a little oil until softened, then add the garlic and beef mince and cook until browned.
  3. Stir in the tomato purée, tinned chopped tomatoes, dried oregano and a splash of water. Season with salt and black pepper, then simmer until thickened.
  4. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce over the base of the dish, add lasagne sheets, then spoon over more sauce and dot with soft cheese. Repeat the layers until everything is used, finishing with sauce and cheddar cheese on top.
  5. Bake for 35–40 minutes until bubbling and browned. Rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
