Why this works

A hearty, protein-rich barbecue burger that is relatively energy-dense and high in saturated fat and sodium, with modest fibre and vegetable content.

High-quality protein. Beef mince and cheddar provide a substantial protein hit, supporting satiety and muscle maintenance.

Iron and zinc. Beef is a useful source of iron and zinc, which contribute to normal oxygen transport and immune function.

Saturated fat and sodium. Cheddar, salted beef and added salt make this dish relatively high in saturated fat and sodium, so it is best enjoyed occasionally.

Method

  1. Heat the barbecue to a medium-high heat.
  2. Put the beef mince in a bowl with salt and black pepper, then shape into 4 even patties.
  3. Press a small dip into the centre of each patty so they cook evenly.
  4. Cook the burgers for 4 to 5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through.
  5. Add a slice of cheddar to each burger for the last minute, if using.
  6. Toast the burger buns on the barbecue for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  7. Build the burgers with lettuce, tomato, red onion, ketchup and mustard, then serve hot.
