Why this works

A comforting, moderately filling porridge with useful protein and fibre, but it contains added sugar and a moderate amount of saturated fat from the milk.

Beta-glucan fibre from oats. Porridge oats provide soluble fibre, which can help support healthy cholesterol levels and improve satiety.

Protein and calcium from milk. Milk contributes good-quality protein plus calcium for bone health, making this a more balanced breakfast than oats alone.

Added sugar and salt. The caster sugar increases free sugar content, while the pinch of salt adds sodium, so this is less suitable for a low-sugar or low-sodium diet as written.

Method

  1. Add the porridge oats and milk to a saucepan with a small pinch of salt.
  2. Set over a medium heat and stir regularly until thick and creamy, about 6–8 minutes.
  3. Sweeten with caster sugar if you like, then serve straight away while hot.
