Why this works

A simple, moderately filling porridge with a good balance of carbohydrate and protein, but it contains some saturated fat from milk and is not especially high in fibre.

Beta-glucan from oats. Oats provide soluble fibre, including beta-glucan, which supports healthy cholesterol levels and steadier digestion.

Calcium and B vitamins. Milk contributes calcium for bone health, plus B vitamins such as riboflavin and B12 if using cow’s milk.

Moderate natural sugar. Most of the sugar comes naturally from lactose in milk, rather than added sugar, so it is relatively plain and unsweetened.

Method

  1. Put the oats and milk into a saucepan.
  2. Set over a medium heat and stir often as the mixture begins to thicken.
  3. Cook for 5–7 minutes until creamy and the oats are tender.
  4. Serve hot.
