Why this works

Hearty, energy-dense bake with good protein, but fairly high in saturated fat and salt; best suited as an occasional main meal rather than an everyday lighter option.

Protein-rich. Minced beef and cheddar provide a substantial amount of protein, supporting satiety and muscle maintenance.

Calcium source. Cheddar cheese contributes calcium for bone health, though it also adds saturated fat and salt.

Potassium and fibre. Potatoes add potassium and some fibre, especially if the skins are left on.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (Fan 170°C, 374°F, Gas Mark 5).
  2. Boil the potatoes in salted water for 10 minutes, just until beginning to soften, then drain.
  3. Meanwhile, cook the minced beef in a pan for 8-10 minutes until browned.
  4. Season with herbs and salt, then stir in a little water and simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Grease a baking dish with a little butter and add a layer of potatoes, followed by a layer of beef, then more potatoes.
  6. Dot with the remaining butter and finish with Cheddar cheese on top.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is deeply golden.
