Why this works

A protein-rich, savoury meat loaf that is relatively high in saturated fat and sodium, so it is best suited to occasional meals rather than everyday eating.

High-quality protein. Beef mince and egg provide a substantial amount of complete protein, supporting muscle maintenance and satiety.

Iron and B12. Beef is a good source of haem iron and vitamin B12, both important for red blood cell production and energy metabolism.

Salt load. The added salt, Worcestershire sauce and packet savoury mixes make this dish notably high in sodium.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (Fan 160°C, 356°F, Gas Mark 4) and lightly oil a loaf tin with the plain cooking oil.
  2. Empty the brown packet, yellow packet, dark grey packet and green packet into a large bowl. If the packets contain dry savoury mix, tip them in as the seasoning base.
  3. Add the beef mince, onion, breadcrumbs and egg to the bowl, then pour in the water and mix until just combined.
  4. Stir in the tomato purée and Worcestershire sauce, then season with salt and black pepper if needed.
  5. Shape the mixture into a loaf and press it into the prepared tin.
  6. Bake for about 55 minutes until cooked through and lightly browned on top.
  7. Rest for 10 minutes before turning out and slicing to serve.
