Why this works

A rich, energy-dense toastie with moderate protein but high saturated fat and sodium, best enjoyed occasionally rather than as an everyday choice.

Calcium from cheese. The cheese provides a useful amount of calcium and phosphorus for bone health.

High saturated fat. Butter, cheese and garlic mayonnaise make this dish high in saturated fat, which is less favourable for heart health.

Sodium content. Cheese and mayonnaise contribute a relatively high sodium load, especially if the bread is also salted.

Method

  1. Lay out 4 slices of bread and spread garlic mayonnaise over 2 slices, keeping a little back if you like a stronger flavour.
  2. Divide the grated cheese evenly over the garlic mayonnaise, then top with the remaining bread slices to make 2 sandwiches.
  3. Heat a frying pan over a medium-low heat and butter the outsides of the sandwiches on both sides.
  4. Cook the toasties for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted.
  5. Leave to sit for 1 minute, then slice and serve hot.
