Why this works

Decadent, energy-dense dessert with moderate fruit content and relatively high saturated fat and sugar.

Vitamin C from berries. Strawberries and mixed berries contribute vitamin C and polyphenol antioxidants, which help support immune function and overall dietary quality.

High saturated fat. Chocolate, double cream and milk make this dish high in saturated fat, so it is best enjoyed occasionally rather than as an everyday dessert.

Some fibre from fruit and whole ingredients. The berries and chocolate provide a modest amount of fibre, though the refined bread keeps the overall fibre content moderate.

Method

  1. Place the chocolate in a small heatproof bowl.
  2. Warm the milk in a small saucepan over a low heat until steaming, but not boiling.
  3. Pour the warm milk over the chocolate and leave for 1 minute to soften.
  4. Stir until smooth and glossy. If needed, warm very gently over low heat for a few seconds more.
  5. Slice the bread and toast it until lightly crisp.
  6. Hull the strawberries and arrange them with the fresh berries on a serving plate.
  7. Pour the chocolate fondue into a warm serving bowl and serve immediately with the toast and fruit for dipping.
