Why this works

Energy-dense and high in protein and saturated fat, with very low fibre and carbohydrate.

Protein-rich filling. Chorizo, cheese and egg provide a substantial protein boost, which may support satiety and muscle maintenance.

High saturated fat and salt. Chorizo and cheese are typically high in saturated fat and sodium, so this dish is best enjoyed occasionally.

Low fibre. With no vegetables or whole grains included, this recipe contributes very little fibre for digestive health.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C, 392°F, Gas Mark 6) and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Remove the skins from the chorizo sausages and crumble or finely chop the meat into a bowl.
  3. If needed, grate the cheese so it melts easily.
  4. Roll or shape the dough into a large ring on the prepared tray, leaving a wide centre opening.
  5. Cut evenly spaced slits around the outer edge of the dough, then spoon the chorizo and cheese filling around the ring.
  6. Fold the dough strips over the filling, alternating them towards the centre to form a plaited couronne shape, and seal the ends securely.
  7. Brush the entire surface with the beaten egg for wash.
  8. Bake for 25–30 minutes until deeply golden, crisp and cooked through.
  9. Leave to rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving warm.
