Why this works

A moderate-calorie, protein-rich meatball dish with fairly high sugar from the glaze and moderate sodium from ketchup and Worcestershire sauce.

Lean protein source. Turkey mince provides a good amount of protein per serving, supporting muscle maintenance and satiety.

Added sugar from the glaze. Soft drink and tomato ketchup contribute most of the sugar, making this less suitable for low-sugar diets.

Moderate sodium. Worcestershire sauce and ketchup add salt, so the dish is not especially low in sodium.

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C, 392°F, Gas Mark 6).

Let the oven come fully up to temperature before the meatballs go in, so the outside sets quickly rather than drying out in a sluggish oven.

  2. Mix the turkey mince with breadcrumbs, egg, and finely grated onion, then shape into meatballs.

Mix just until the ingredients are evenly distributed; overworking the turkey will make the meatballs dense and tough instead of tender.

  3. Bake for 15 minutes until lightly browned.

Look for pale golden patches and a firm, springy surface rather than deep colour, as turkey can dry out if you wait for a dark crust.

  4. Meanwhile, simmer the soft drink with tomato ketchup and Worcestershire sauce for 10 minutes.

Keep the simmer low and steady so the liquid reduces to a glossy sauce; if it boils hard, the sugar can catch and turn bitter.

  5. Add the meatballs to the sauce and cook for 5 minutes more, turning to coat.

Turn the meatballs gently with a spoon or tongs so they stay intact, and stop once the sauce clings in a shiny coating rather than pooling in the pan.
