Why this works

A rich, energy-dense toastie that is high in saturated fat and sodium, with a moderate protein content but limited fibre and a fairly sugary drink component.

Calcium and protein from cheese. The cheese contributes a useful amount of protein and calcium for bone health, but also adds a lot of saturated fat.

High sodium from bacon and cheese. Bacon and cheese are both salt-rich ingredients, making this a higher-sodium meal than ideal for frequent consumption.

Sugary drink increases free sugars. The lime drink is likely the main source of sugar in the meal and adds little nutritional value.

Method

  1. Preheat a frying pan over a medium heat and lay in the bacon. Fry until crisp, then transfer to kitchen paper and roughly chop.
  2. Place the cheese between two slices of bread with the chopped bacon, then press together firmly.
  3. Butter the outside of the bread lightly if desired, then cook the toastie in the pan for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down with a spatula, until the bread is golden and the cheese has melted.
  4. Serve immediately with a chilled lime drink on the side.
