Why this works

A moderately high-energy pasta dish with some protein and calcium from Parmesan, but it is fairly refined-carb heavy and likely moderate in sodium and saturated fat.

Lycopene from tomato sauce. Tomato-based sauce provides lycopene, an antioxidant linked with heart health.

Garlic benefits. Garlic contributes small amounts of vitamin C and may offer supportive phytonutrient compounds.

Saturated fat and sodium. Butter, margarine and Parmesan add saturated fat, while jarred sauces can contribute a meaningful sodium load.

Method

  1. Cook the pasta until al dente, then drain and reserve a little cooking water.
  2. Melt the butter with the margarine in a pan and cook the garlic gently for 1 minute.
  3. Add the pasta sauce and spaghetti sauce, then simmer until hot and combined.
  4. Toss through the cooked pasta, loosening with a splash of the reserved water if needed.
  5. Serve immediately while glossy and hot.
