Why this works
A rich, energy-dense toasted melt with good protein and calcium, but high in saturated fat and sodium from the cheese, butter and salami.
Protein and calcium. Ricotta, grated cheese and salami provide a moderate amount of protein, while the dairy ingredients contribute calcium for bone health.
High sodium. Salami, cheese and added salt make this dish relatively high in sodium, so it may not suit those managing blood pressure.
Saturated fat. Butter, cheese and processed meat increase saturated fat, which is worth limiting if aiming for a heart-healthier meal.
Method
- Mix the ricotta, grated cheese and a pinch of salt together in a bowl.
- Butter the outside of two slices of bread, then spread the ricotta mixture on the inside and layer over the salami.
- Close the sandwich and cook in a frying pan over a medium-low heat for 3-4 minutes each side until golden and the cheese has melted.
- Cut in half and serve immediately.
