Why this works

An indulgent, energy-dense sweet breakfast with moderate protein, high saturated fat and sugar, best enjoyed as an occasional treat.

Chocolate provides cocoa compounds. Chocolate contributes some flavanols and a small amount of iron, but it also adds a significant amount of sugar and saturated fat depending on the bar used.

Eggs add protein and micronutrients. The eggs provide complete protein, plus vitamin B12 and selenium, which support normal energy metabolism and thyroid function.

Butter and chocolate raise saturated fat. This recipe is notably high in saturated fat, mainly from butter and chocolate, so it is less heart-friendly if eaten often.

Method

  1. Place the chopped chocolate bar between two slices of bread to make 2 sandwiches, pressing the edges lightly to seal.
  2. In a shallow bowl, whisk the eggs with milk and caster sugar until smooth.
  3. Heat a little butter in a frying pan over medium heat.
  4. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides well without soaking for too long.
  5. Fry for 2–3 minutes on each side until golden brown and the chocolate has melted.
  6. Serve warm, sliced in half if you like, with an optional dusting of caster sugar or a little ground cinnamon.
