Why this works

A salty, high-fat appetiser that’s relatively protein-rich but best enjoyed in small portions due to its processed meat and sodium content.

Protein from Spam. Provides a useful amount of protein per serving, which can help with satiety, but Spam is a processed meat rather than a lean protein source.

High sodium content. Spam, barbecue sauce and ketchup all contribute sodium, so this dish can use up a large share of the daily salt recommendation.

Low fibre. This recipe contains virtually no fibre or vegetables, so it is not very supportive for gut health or blood sugar control.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 210°C (Fan 190°C, 410°F, Gas Mark 6).
  2. Cut the Spam into cubes and place in a baking dish.
  3. Mix the barbecue sauce, ketchup and melted butter, then pour over the Spam and toss to coat.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes, turning once, then finish with sliced jalapeños and serve warm.
