Why this works

A savoury, energy-dense hash with moderate protein and fibre, but relatively high saturated fat and sodium due to chorizo, butter and pickles.

Vitamin A from sweet potato. Sweet potato is a strong source of beta-carotene, supporting vitamin A intake for eye and immune health.

Protein and calcium from yoghurt. The yoghurt drizzle adds a modest protein boost and some calcium, depending on whether it is plain dairy yoghurt.

Sodium and saturated fat to watch. Chorizo, butter and pickles make this dish high in sodium and saturated fat, so portion size matters for heart health.

Method

  1. Peel and dice the sweet potato into small cubes.
  2. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil and simmer the sweet potato for 6-8 minutes until just tender, then drain well.
  3. Heat a large frying pan and cook the chorizo until it releases its oil and starts to crisp.
  4. Add the butter and drained sweet potato, then fry for 8-10 minutes until golden and crisp at the edges.
  5. Season with black pepper and a little salt if needed.
  6. Stir the yoghurt with a small splash of water to make a spoonable drizzle, then spoon over the hash to serve.
  7. Scatter over chopped pickles just before serving.
