Why this works

A very low-calorie, tangy spread that is light overall but relatively high in sodium and best used sparingly.

Low energy density. Per serving this is very light, which can help keep sandwich calories down.

Sodium caution. Pickles, mustard and added salt make this spread fairly salty for the small portion size.

Some probiotic potential. If the yoghurt contains live cultures, it may contribute beneficial bacteria, though the amount per serving is small.

Method

  1. Finely chop the pickles and place them in a bowl.
  2. Add the yoghurt, mustard and onion chutney, then mix until evenly combined.
  3. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  4. Spread over bread, rolls or crackers and serve straight away, or chill for 15 minutes to let the flavours develop.
