Why this works

A very indulgent dessert with high sugar and saturated fat, best enjoyed occasionally rather than as an everyday choice.

High sugar load. The jelly, cake, vanilla slices and chocolate bar combine to make this dessert very high in free sugars.

Saturated fat. Vanilla slice and chocolate contribute a notable amount of saturated fat, which should be limited in a balanced diet.

Low fibre and protein. This trifle provides little fibre or protein, so it is less filling than more balanced desserts.

Method

  1. Cut the cake into bite-sized cubes and divide half between serving glasses or a dish.
  2. Prepare the lime jelly according to the packet instructions, then pour over the cake and chill until just beginning to set.
  3. Slice the vanilla slice into small pieces and layer on top of the partially set jelly.
  4. Scatter over grated chocolate bar and add the remaining cake cubes.
  5. Chill for at least 2 hours, then serve cold.
