Why this works

A savoury, protein-rich dish that is fairly energy-dense and relatively high in saturated fat and sodium from the bacon and cheese.

High-quality protein. Eggs, bacon and cheese provide a substantial amount of protein, supporting satiety and muscle maintenance.

B vitamins and choline. Eggs contribute choline, while bacon and cheese add B vitamins such as B12, which are important for energy metabolism.

Salt and saturated fat. Processed bacon and cheese raise the sodium and saturated fat content, so this dish is best enjoyed in moderation.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 210°C (Fan 190°C, 410°F, Gas Mark 6) and line a tray with baking paper.
  2. Cook the bacon until crisp, then chop finely.
  3. Boil 4 of the eggs for 9 minutes, cool under cold water and peel them.
  4. Mix the cooked bacon with the grated cheese and a little beaten egg from the remaining eggs to help bind the mixture.
  5. Wrap the mixture around each boiled egg, shaping into neat croquettes.
  6. Roll each one in breadcrumbs, place on the tray and brush with a little beaten egg.
  7. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes until crisp and deeply golden.
