Why this works
A rich, savoury, energy-dense snack with a high fat and salt content, best enjoyed occasionally rather than as an everyday choice.
Chorizo and sodium. Chorizo is typically high in saturated fat and salt, which pushes sodium up in this dish.
Cheese and protein. The cheese and eggs contribute some protein and calcium, but also add more saturated fat.
Low fibre. With crisps and refined flour, this recipe is very low in fibre and unlikely to support fullness for long.
Method
- Finely chop the chorizo sausages and cut the cheese slices into small cubes or strips.
- Crush the crisps into fine crumbs and tip them into a shallow bowl.
- Beat the eggs in a second bowl.
- Form small bite-sized pieces with the chorizo and cheese, pressing them together firmly.
- Dip each bite into the beaten egg, then roll in the crushed crisps until well coated.
- Place the bites on a plate and chill for 5 minutes to help them hold their shape.
- Heat a little margarine in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the bites for 3–4 minutes, turning carefully, until golden and hot through.
- Serve immediately with tartare sauce for dipping.
